Social networks are all the rage! I've recently implemented a prototype for a video based social network that includes membership, friends, top featured content, featured members, forums and groups. The system is based on the Drupal CMS(i) and runs in the LAMP environment.
Drupal was great for this sort of project because it's open source and comes with a variety of modules that are contributed by the diverse community of users and developers. The system enables rapid development on a secure and well supported platform.
It's not "just" a CMS, just about any web based project can be successfully built on this platform. I'm definitely hooked.
